The Creation
Darkness. Darkness was always first. The sensation of nothingness. It was never ending; being left to the abyss. No, it wasn't never ending... It felt like an eternity, but the sensation of another had reached inside. He perceived something other than darkness. Another being like him; Light. He could tell just how different they were. They were warm, full of creativity, and they were small. He, on the other hand, was cold, vast, and unchanging. They swirled around each other until they could understand their purpose. Many languages tumbled out of their mouths until one caught in both of their throats. Then, they finally put a name to themselves.
"I am Gaea. I am Life and Light."
"I am Erebus. I am Death and Darkness."
The two seemed unsure of their announcements, but also knew that they could not strike the other. A sense of balance had set upon them as soon as they had declared their names and roles. This was the beginning.
For a time the two experimented. Gaea would create, and Erebus would destroy. No personality beset the two while they figured out their power. No, it took a while for the two to realize their natures. It happened once Gaea created a world. A small, beautiful planet; filled with strange creatures and plants. Erebus hadn't seen such power from her. But he had a role to play. While Gaea fawned over her new creations, Erebus went to work filling her world with death and decay. Once he had finished, he realized that Gaea was distraught. As though this was the first time that he had ever done this. She never got upset with him until now. He didn't understand. She cried and mourned the dying planet until it ceased to exist.
"How could you!" She'd cry, and he would just stare at her.
"These are our roles...." He'd remind her, but she wouldn't hear it.
Then she went silent, and grew distant from him. She wouldn't create, she wouldn't speak; she would just stare into the abyss with the saddest eyes. But this didn't bother him too much. She couldn't sulk about their unchanging natures for too long. The balance would unravel if she didn't create. So he waited. He got impatient and tried to convince her to maintain her role. He grew angry at her impudence. How could she stand by and let their universe crumble. She used to understand that this was how it was supposed to be. And soon, he couldn't stand her any longer. He left her to sulk. He welcomed the nothingness.
Until... He felt the warmth again. He watched her create a new world. A desolate rock, a canvas, for her to do as she pleased with. She couldn't hold back her need to create any longer. The planet filled with lush foliage, and small, insignificant, creatures. Erebus waited for her to finish before he would assume his role once more. However; she created two strange creatures upon this planet. They looked similar, yet different. He didn't really care; he had a job to do. And he went about it. However; something was off. He couldn't seem to make the plants wilt, or the animals wither. Everything resisted his touch. Even the two creatures she had made resisted him. Even fighting back. He confronted his counter part with anger. How dare she shield her creations from him! He had to destroy her things! But she refused to lift her magic. He was furious, but let her watch her planet destroy itself. He would let her learn her own lesson if she didn't want to listen to him.
And it didn't take long. Soon her planet was overrun with her creations; suffocating itself with life. She seemed to come to him begrudgingly, but he could tell she couldn't stand letting her creations suffer like this. She was truly becoming a motherly figure. She agreed to lift her power, if he agreed to leave her two special creations alone. Of course, he wanted to tell her 'no exceptions', but it seemed to be only fair to let her have a reward. So he spread his death and destruction upon the planet, but granting the two special beings pardon from the darkness.
But this wasn't the end. Gaea had blossomed into a full fledged Goddess, and she had learned how the world must work. She even continued to perfect her special creations. She made three more; One to represent the sun she had placed in the sky. A second to represent the moon that brought light to the night. And a third that made sure that night fell. Erebus was starting to get jealous of these creations. She made these in her essence, thus he could not touch them.
"These have been born of my womb, and are essential to the balance of this planet." She told him. He understood balance, but what he did not understand was why she needed to impart her power into new beings to do something she could have done herself. Yet, he left them as she asked.
She spent all her time creating these strange creatures; molding creations she named 'Makoatls'. He upset her every time he took one's life, but he just did his job. Though soon... It wasn't just his job. Soon he did it out of spite. Out of the thrill of the creature's fear of him. He didn't understand at first why he enjoyed breaking Gaea's things. Certainly, they weren't meant to be anything more than the natural order, but he found his personality had changed. Why didn't she pay more attention to him? He was at the beginning with her... Why did she care about those creations so much? They were fleeting. Not like he and her. So he derived pleasure from destroying her work. He even found he could use the dead as extra weaponry against them. Their fear was delicious, and he couldn't get enough. That too would be fleeting...
